It's The Elfin Apocalypse! The Klaus Brothers Series ON SALE FOR 99 CENTS!

The Christmas season is upon us! Time for a special holiday treat!

I recently got the rights back for The Klaus Brothers Series from my publisher, and so I re-released SWEET MAGIK (Book #2) with a brand-new cover.

I don't have any new holiday stories this year, so I thought it would be nice to offer the first two books on sale...

SWEET INSPIRATION (The Klaus Brothers Series #1)
and
SWEET MAGIK (The Klaus Brothers Series #2) are
 99 cents at these locations...

Sweet Inspiration (Book #1)... Read more about this book here!

Amazon -- 99 cents
Barnes and Noble -- 99 cents
Kobo -- 99 cents

Sweet Magik (Book #2)... Read more about this book here!

Amazon -- 99 cents
Barnes and Noble -- 99 cents
Kobo -- 99 cents

I've seen warnings on some erotica, so I thought I would add one here for my series. Ready?

THE KLAUS BROTHERS SERIES contains scenes with elves, x-treme Christmas spirit, Santa Claus, the North Pole, sex-in-a-sleigh, magic, old-fashioned romance, and very sweet scenarios. It requires a willing suspension of disbelief, a love of beards, and is enhanced by the addition of a gingerbread latte.

Good luck!

I've made up a couple of fun Etsy treasury collections to celebrate!

ELF cookies from lorisplace, Etsy

Peppermint holiday earrings from JarosDesigns, Etsy

Check out PEPPERMINTY PANACHE!

I decided the rest of the series will be novellas. Coming up next...Sweet Adventure (#3) is Sven's story. I added a new one just for Gregor and his true love called Sweet Cinderella (#4). And the final novella is Sweet Destiny (#5), which is Wolfgang's story.

I'm hoping to get SWEET ADVENTURE out for next xmas, 2014.

Please spread the word about this awesome sale. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Updates from the Pen-Meister

From the Pen-a-mator, from the Pen-ster, from the Pen-a-rama, from the...

I'll stop now.

UPDATES

1. First update: I am in the midst of getting my rights back for SWEET MAGIK, the second book of the Klaus Brothers Series. I will eventually be editing and self-publishing this novel, but it won't happen until Christmas 2014. It will take up to four months for all of the digital and print books to be removed from other bookstores.

So, NO NEW KLAUS BROTHERS this Christmas!

(Penny ducks rotten tomatoes).

I have already started SWEET ADVENTURE (#3 of the Klaus Brothers Series), but I won't publish until the whole series has reverted back to me. It's looking good for 2014!

HOWEVER, I am working on another project which I'm hoping will be published either late fall or early winter. It's called APPLES SHOULD BE RED, aka my "geriatric love story." So far, my critique partners are digging it, so I hope all of my readers will enjoy this one, too. It is definitely outside of the box of the regular romance novel, but it is still a love story, and has a happy ending.

Please don't throw rotten tomatoes at me! Or gingerbread snaps!

2. I am super excited to be part of the first Local Independent Author Evening at Wellesley Books, in Wellesley, MA. It's taking place on Thursday Oct 3, from 6-8 PM. I'll be there with copies of LUCY THE WONDER WEENIE, SWEET INSPIRATION, and of course LUMBERJACK IN LOVE. Stop by for some refreshments, chat with some local authors, and support the indie movement!

Come on over. You know you want to!

3. Registration is still open for the INDIE AUTHOR SYMPOSIUM, hosted by yours truly and Marie Force. Limited hotel rooms available, so hurry up and book now!

Yes, I want to hear Marie Force and Penny Watson teach me the meaning of life, I mean self-publishing tips!

4. This is possibly the funniest cover I have ever seen in my life, compliments of Nathan Shumate at LOUSY BOOK COVERS.

D'uh! D'oy! D'oh! I AM THE MOUNTAIN KING!

5. Check out this great post by Tasha about prologues--at Book Riot. THE PROBLEM WITH PROLOGUES

6. I am jonesing for this yummy-looking pumpkin recipe, compliments of Kenda at FULL FORKS AHEAD...get your pumpkin frozen yogurt

That's it for today! Hope everyone is having a nice week.

Ciao!

Making Assumptions Makes An Ass Out Of...Well, Not You, Just Me

Once upon a time, I made an assumption.

That folks might be sick of the same old-same old-book covers and enjoy something different. Quirky. Funny. Outside-of-the-box.

Whoops! You know what happens when you make an assumption.

To be fair, some people did enjoy the quirky book cover...See Exhibit A:

Exhibit A

It's a parody of a bodice ripper-Fabio book cover from the 1980s. In block-print style.

And I personally think it's hilarious and cute.

Unfortunately, I had many readers give comments like these...cheesy, horrible, amateurish, cartoony, if you can't afford a real cover artist please don't make your own covers, etc. Obviously, they didn't get the humor or appreciate the fact that I hired a professional artist to do this fun cover.

Oh well. Live and learn.

I decided to stick with the cover. And then I saw that many readers were reluctant to download this book as a freebie because of the cover.

God Good Almighty! Turning down a free book that was recommended because of the cover? I had to make a change.

So, here's what I decided to do. I am keeping the original quirky cover for the print books. And I had Lena Goldfinch design a gorgeous new cover for the e-books...still available at Amazon, soon to be available at Barnes and Noble and Kobo. (See new cover above...LOVE it!) If you're looking for a totally kick-ass, amazing designer for a book cover, I cannot recommend Lena highly enough. She is fabulous!

Anyhow, that's my cover melodrama in a nutshell.

In other news, The Wild Rose Press is having a Black Friday sale today. Sweet Magik, #2 of the Klaus Brothers Series, is on sale for $3.89!

And finally, the most important news of all. I made the cranberry mojitos yesterday for Thanksgiving dinner, and they were absolutely delish! See Exhibit B.

Exhibit B

I have lots of books to discuss, which I will get to on Monday. Hairy books, DNF books, innocent virgin mistress books, and my first inter-racial story which I loved.

Hope all of you have a great weekend!

Didn't See That One Coming

And in somewhat unexpected news yesterday, the following occurred....

1. Aliens landed in Hollywood and kidnapped the Kardashian family.
2. Santa Claus announced his retirement and subsequent relocation to Aruba.
3. My daughter ate something healthy.
4. RT Book Reviews reviewed Sweet Magik in a Web-Exclusive Review.

I know. I know. You're shaking your head and thinking "Sure, Penny, RT Book Reviews reviewed your little Christmas story. Uh huh."

Haaa Haaaa Haaa Haaaaaa!!!!!!!!! Craziness!!!!!!

Anyhow, it's a very nice review. Here are some snippets and here is the link to the full review:

"This book starts with a crazy premise and it just gets wackier as it goes." Holy crap! That is so true! It is wacky!

"....there are some surprisingly sweet moments." Sweet! I love sweet!

"Sweet Magik will surely help readers get into the Christmas spirit, at least those readers that are willing to suspend disbelief and go along for a ride to the North Pole." Hot diggity damn, that's awesome!

Okay, I am done hyperventilating, dancing a jig, and checking to make sure one of my friends isn't playing a practical joke on me.

(Julia--you better not be playing a practical joke on me!!)

Pretty sure she's not.

Hope everyone has a great day! (Wouldn't it be great if aliens really did kidnap the Kardashians?)

Monday Morning Updates: Girlz With Guns, Velveeta-Free Reviews, & Mamma Mia

1. I survived the weekend. My 9 year old daughter's laser tag party was a big hit. 15 screaming kids ran around shooting each other, consuming enormous quantities of sugar products, and producing ear-piercing screams that could shatter fine crystal. All in all, a fine party.

2. I am tickled that the sales for Sweet Inspiration are popping up this Christmas. I got a great review from Dead Trees and Silver Screens. I think it's hilarious that Amanda calls it "Velveeta-free." I personally love cheesy stories, so I wouldn't mind some Velveeta with my book, but that's just me.

3. Historical romance author Mia Marlowe is hosting me today at her blog. We are discussing my penchant for beardy men, Oskar Klaus, and tube tops. Stop by and leave a comment--Mia is giving away a copy of Sweet Magik, as well as one of her own stories, A Duke For All Seasons or My Lady Below Stairs. I love the name Mia...it reminds me of Mamma Mia, which reminds me of ABBA, which reminds me....

Elves and Magik

The countdown has begun for the digital release of Sweet Magik! This Friday, November 4, Oskar Klaus and his brothers will be visiting Penelope's, and giving away an adorable holiday necklace and a copy of my latest installment of the Klaus Brothers Series.

In the meantime, I thought I would post an excerpt about the other cool dude in this book. He's short, he's conflicted, he's got pointy ears.....yep, he's an elf. Ingo plays an integral part of this story. And so does the magic of the North Pole. Here's an excerpt from Sweet Magik to introduce you to Ingo and the magical mayhem of Glasdorf.....

Ingo pawed through a stack of old books in the library. He hadn't bothered to turn on a lamp. Thin shards of moonlight filtered through the dusty windows and cast an unearthly glow around the room.
"Where the hell did I put it? It's got to be here somewhere." Finally he spied a teetering pile by the desk and the thick tome at the bottom looked familiar.
"Ah, got it!" He pushed the tower, scattering manuscripts on the floor. Carefully, he lifted the gold-edged book, brushing cobwebs off the leather bindings. It had been scores of years since he had the occasion to look at this volume. Even after all of this time, bits of light buzzed off the ragged edges of the spine, reminding him how powerful the Zauberwort Buch really was.
He held the ancient tome in a shaft of light, illuminating the faded pages.
What are you gonna do, Ingo Hertz? Verboten. Verboten. The magik of our ancestors is a sacred responsibility. Not to be used in an inappropriate manner. Not to be used for personal gain, vengeance, or evil intent.
The voice of Master Eugen echoed in his head.
His callused fingers hesitated over the book. Then the image of Lys struggling to free herself from Per's grip popped into his mind. He flipped open the tome and a long sigh was released into the air. Swirls of dust laced with magik funneled upward from the yellowed-pages and disappeared into the darkness.
The Zauberwort Buch jumped from his hands and started to hop across the floor. Ingo could tell the magik was warming up, getting ready for mischief. Eugen taught all of the elves of Glasdorf that the magik must be reined in; its natural course was to "run toward trouble." He would shout "Dicke Luft!" (trouble's brewing) as streams of unrestrained magik swirled throughout the classroom, teasing the students, attempting to incite them.
Ingo distinguished himself from an early age as a Magik Bändiger, or magik tamer. Only certain elves were capable of this feat. It required the ability to trick the magik, which was extremely difficult. Magik was crafty and cunning and had a mind of its own. Tricking it at its own game entailed complex strategies depending on the energy involved. Ingo always enjoyed devising traps for the runaway magik, and then sitting back to watch the inevitable downfall.
Master Eugen had been disappointed that he had not apprenticed as a Bändiger, but the Hertz family had a long and distinguished history as woodworkers, and Ingo's talent with the wood rivaled his talent with the magik.
Ingo felt the familiar thrill of power course through him as he dove for the book, grappling with it as it snapped at his fingers.
"Halt!" he barked at the irksome Buch. Too bad these spells don't work on elves, or I'd give Per a night he would never forget. The elfin magik worked on the human population, but not on other elves. It was a built-in protection for their well-being.
Fumbling in the darkness, he found a candle on his desk and lit it. He carefully pulled apart the dusty pages of the book until he found a section entitled Herz Magik, Heart Magik. He nodded as he perused the ancient spells, searching for one he remembered from long ago. Once he located the enchantment, he knocked about his house collecting various items...scraps of paper, more candles, a newspaper article, a button, and finally a page ripped from his new calendar in the kitchen.
Ingo placed the Zauberwort Buch in the center of his desk, opened to a spell called Zottig Herz (Ragged Heart). First he scribbled his name and Oskar's onto a piece of paper and placed it on the tome. Then, he took the calendar insert and held it over the flickering flame of the candle, scorching the date January first, just above the image of a crescent moon. He searched the calendar for the full moon. January eleventh. Eleven days of misery. He singed the square marked eleven, blackening the plump full moon.
Ingo rubbed the mother-of-pearl button in his callused fingers and reverently placed it atop the book. Then the article, torn from a Klaus Enterprise newsletter. Every spare candle in his home was scattered on the tabletop, looking like a collection of ominous stalagmites. He took a deep breath and swallowed the last of the liquor from his flask. The empty container fell to the ground, clattering on the floor.
Ingo began to recite the words, dictated centuries ago. For one brief moment, his voice wavered as he thought of Lys and her sweet smiling face. She was all goodness and light, and he knew she would not approve of this act of vengeance. But the images of Wiebe's laughing face and Per tugging at Lys' waist swirled inside his brain and his voice gained momentum as the ancient words rolled off his tongue. Again and again he uttered the spell, until he collapsed in a drunken stupor on the floor. As he fell into a foggy slumber, Ingo could hear the Zauberwort Buch rattling on the table, brimming with mischief.

I was inspired by elfin things this weekend, and created a special Etsy treasury list. Please enjoy "It's The Elfin Apocalypse!" (I know, I know....I have an Etsy problem. So shoot me!)

Sweet Magik Print Version Now Available! Giveaway Today!

I was surprised to get an email yesterday letting me know my latest Christmas novel, Sweet Magik, is now available in print! Release day for the digital format is still 11-4-11. I have mixed feelings about print books, as you all know. I am now addicted to my Kindle for various reasons....I love being able to adjust font size, leave bookmarks/comments for myself in the text, and pages don't snap shut while I'm reading. However, it is sort of cool to have a book in print, even if it is totally overpriced ($15!!!).

Since the print version is a bit pricey, I would love to give a copy away for free. Here are the rules for the giveaway....

1.) Leave a comment.
2.) Any old comment.
3.) Tell me about your dog, your husband's beard, your garden, what book you're reading right now.
4.) Just say hi.
5.) Make sure I have your email so I can get in touch if you win!
6.) Giveaway is open until Friday Oct 14.
7.) Have a nice day.

That's it! If you would like to read an excerpt, please visit my website....Penny Watson.

Here's the book blurb for Sweet Magik....it's the 2nd installment of the Klaus Brothers Series. Yep, those Klaus brothers! You know.....they live in the North Pole, deliver gifts all over the earth, get themselves into a boatload of trouble. Happy Reading!

SWEET MAGIK......

Oskar Klaus' job is killing him. Not even his favorite hobbies (extreme snowboarding and browsing old bookstores) are enough to snap him out of his funk. It's not easy living in the shadow of four successful older brothers and a father named Santa. Little does he know that a kiss on New Year's Eve is about to turn his life upside-down.

Kiana Grant's Manhattan life is a world away from her childhood in Oahu. She traded sunsets and surfing for a respectable career in library science, but Oskar Klaus is a temptation that's hard to resist. Before she knows it, she's in the midst of an outrageous adventure in the North Pole, dealing with mischievous elves, wicked demons, and a devastating attraction to Santa's youngest son.

There's just one problem...a bitter elf hell-bent on revenge threatens the future of everyone in the North Pole, even Santa himself...

Cover for Sweet Magik!

Just got my cover this week for Sweet Magik. Yay! I love it....rock on, Oskar! Not sure about the release date yet...hopefully sometime in November 2011. Here is a blurb for the book....

Book Blurb for Sweet Magik

Job Title: Director of Elfin Resources

Location: The North Pole

Employer: St. Nicholas

Description: Babysitting a bunch of ornery, cussing, crotchety elves

Oskar Klaus' job is killing him. Not even his favorite hobbies (extreme snowboarding and browsing old bookstores) are enough to snap him out of his funk. It's not easy living in the shadow of four successful older brothers and a father named Santa. Little does he know that an unexpected kiss on New Year's Eve is about to turn his life upside down.

Kiana Grant's Manhattan life is a world away from her childhood in Oahu. She traded stunning sunsets and bad boy surfers for a respectable career in library science. Oskar Klaus poses a temptation to her heart that's hard to resist. Does she have the courage to take a chance on love? Or will a vengeful elf turn her North Pole adventure into a nightmare?

I also updated my website. Check out the new Meet the Klaus Family link, with descriptions of the Klaus family (Santa, Mrs. Klaus and their five sexy sons!). I also have descriptions of the 3 WIPs I'm working on right now, Diabolical (historical), Sweet Adventure (Klaus Brothers Series #3), and L'Araldo Di Primavera (botanical paranormal). My free "quickie"--Sweet Teaser (a teaser for Sweet Adventure)--will be posted on my website on December 1st.

Hope everyone has a Happy Halloween weekend,

Wednesday Update (Bunnies, Popsicles and Grand Finales)

1) I finished my second book yesterday! Sweet Magik is finally done...76,000 words of hot, hunky Klaus boys, elfin spells and demon slaying. Phew. I am soooooo ready for summer vacation!

2) I read Ava Gray's Skin Tight and was pretty surprised. It was a good, solid suspense story but nothing like the edgy, intense, gripping Skin Game. I thought Foster and Mia would be another wild ride, but it was much more of a traditional novel...almost....mellow??? I was expecting Bonnie and Clyde, but instead I got Ozzie and Harriet. Still liked it, just didn't have that edge to it that I was expecting.

3) Found a puddle of sticky blue stuff on the floor of the pantry. My daughter informed me that she decided she didn't want the blue popsicle, so she just dropped it on the floor and left it there. Ok-ay. (She is 7). I am already squirreling up Prozac pills for the adolescent years. I am so screwed.

4) Mrs. Brown Bunny found my veggie garden. And ate my veggie garden. And decided to make a nest next to my veggie garden. So, I filled in the nest and installed a chicken wire fence with sharp sticks, rocks and other deterrents. I'm not going down without a fight.

5) Re-read Lisa Kleypas' Seduce Me At Sunrise. I am so lovin' the whole gypsy thing, it's not even funny. Here's an excerpt for your reading pleasure....

Win's stomach constricted with an ache of pleasure, and her heartbeat hammered in her throat. But she was still angry with him, and she was done with him, and if he had come here for a midnight talk, he was sadly mistaken. She started to tell him so, but to her astonishment, she felt a thick piece of cloth descend over her mouth, and then he was tying it deftly behind her head. In a few more seconds, he had bound her wrists in front of her.

Win was rigid with shock. Merripen would never do something like this. And yet it was him; she would know him of only by the touch of his hands. What did he want? What was going through his mind? His breath was faster than usual as it brushed against her hair. Now that her vision had adjusted to the darkness, she saw that his face was hard and austere.

Merripen drew the ruby ring off her finger and set it on the bedside table. Taking her head in his hands, he stared into her wide eyes. He said only two words. But they explained everything he was doing, and everything he intended to do.

"You're mine."

He picked her up easily, draping her over one powerful shoulder, and he carried her from the room.

Win closed her eyes, yielding, trembling. She pressed a few sobs against the gag covering her mouth, not of unhappiness or fear, but of wild relief. This was not an impulsive act. This was ritual. This was an ancient Romany courtship rite, and there would be nothing half-hearted about it. She was going to be kidnapped and ravished.

Finally.

Rock on, Lisa Kleypas!

Excerpt from Sweet Magik

I finally made it to the 15,000-word mark for my new Work-In-Progress, Sweet Magik! Woo hoo! This is the second of the Klaus Brother's Series. Here is a blurb for the story (just in case you're already thinking ahead to next Christmas....hee hee!), and an excerpt for your reading pleasure. I'm already thinking ahead to a vacation in a tropical location, but since that doesn't appear to be happening any time soon, I guess I'll make due with a roaring fire and a hot toddy until spring shows up. That damned groundhog better not see his shadow tomorrow!!!!

Sweet Magik...

Free-wheeling Oskar Klaus loves snowboarding and no-strings attachments. Or does he? A mind blowing kiss at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve leaves O breathless for uptight librarian Kiana Grant. Little does he know, a mischievous elf in Glasdorf has cast a magik spell on him that will change his destiny forever....

Excerpt.....

Ingo pawed through a stack of old books in the library. He hadn't bothered to turn on a lamp. Thin shards of moonlight filtered through the dusty windows and cast an unearthly glow around the room.

Happy Reading,
