A Walk Down Memory Lane...Santa Style

About ten years ago, I got an idea for a romance novel that just wouldn't go away. It was weird and wacky and when I queried an agent she looked at me like I had lost my mind.

Which I probably had.

She gave me half a dozen good reasons why I would never publish this book, and why it would never see the light of day.

I thought my best selling point was originality. NO ONE ELSE HAD THIS IDEA.

Also, I was winning writing contests.

She didn't care. In fact, the originality was working against me. She didn't want original. She wanted this book to fit into a tidy little box.

She kept asking me, WHO ARE YOU LIKE? WHICH AUTHORS ARE SIMILAR TO YOU?

I said, "I thought I was supposed to be one-of-a-kind, unique, original?"

I was a dumb-ass. I didn't understanding marketing.

A published author told me to delete the "Christmas" out of my Christmas story. I could sell it easily if it was just a regular contemporary romance.

A big name author told me I had to shave my hero. Big beards were not popular at that time, and she said this would turn off readers and publishers.

My book was too short. It was seasonal, the kiss of death. Newbie writers didn't get asked to join anthologies. Sex and Santa were a bad combination.

Well, the most effective way to get me to do something is to tell me I can't do it.

I didn't pad my word count. I didn't remove the Christmas from my Christmas story. I didn't shave my hero.

I kept querying publishers.

A year later, a small publisher told me they loved the book. They had a special section for holiday books! They loved the length! They thought it was sweet and whimsical and romantic!

A year after that, SWEET INSPIRATION was published.

Here I am, ten years later, and I am publishing the final book in the series. Is it a NYT-bestseller? No. Do I have an adorable bunch of readers who love the sweetness of this holiday romance series? Yes, absolutely yes. The best readers ever!

I learned a lot of good lessons with this series. I learned that there are two ways to approach this writing/publishing business. Neither one is better or worse, they're just different.

Some folks write to market. They see what sells, they write accordingly.

Some folks write the story percolating in their brain, regardless of market. They understand it might not sell a lot. It might not appeal to a publisher.

The Klaus Brothers have been on a rocky road with me. I learned about rejection with them. I learned how to write with them. I had a heart attack with them. I learned how to self-publish with them.

I feel like Santa is patting me on the back and pushing me into 2017, a year for new beginnings.

Thanks, Santa!

And HUGE JUMBO GINORMOUS THANK YOU to my readers who have stuck with me on this journey, the bumpy road, the quirky path.

Gearing up for the holidays,
Penny

THE KLAUS BROTHERS boxed set: at Amazon (books 1-3)

EXCERPT (unedited):

--> -->
Ice. Cold.
Gregor Alric Klaus, fourth son of Nicholas and Alena Klaus, Director of Finance for Klaus Enterprises, knew what his colleagues whispered behind his back.
            Cold, calculating, ruthless.
Unemotional, detached, relentless.
There was a reason he was a formidable opponent in the boardroom, and it wasn’t because he was a nice guy.
Gregor Klaus never lost the game. He played to win, every time.
Because of his financial expertise, Klaus Enterprises had established itself as a powerhouse in the industry. The company that produced hand-crafted toys was unparalleled in quality and distribution. The company that brought so many children happiness owed its success to the most cold-hearted brother in the Klaus family.
Even as a child, Gregor displayed an uncanny talent with numbers. While his brothers baked gingerbread and carved toys, he poured over the books with their elfin accountant. Assessing each season, calculating ways to cut overhead, predicting trends. His father didn’t know quite what to do with him, so he set him up as Director of Finance and moved him to New York.
            It was a perfect fit.
Gregor thrived in the urban environment. He loved the architecture, the cutting edge technology, the competition within the industry. He lived in a sparse apartment, adorned with a minimalist décor. He dressed in the height of fashion and enjoyed his gadgets. Even his dates—when he found time to squeeze in a social life—were elegant, tasteful. Cold. His brothers enjoyed an old-fashioned lifestyle in the North Pole, but Gregor had assimilated into the affluent world of Manhattan, a world away from Pfeffernusse cookies and elfin magik.
He lived for two things…his job and his family. Family loyalty was everything. He knew how much his parents and brothers depended on him. He was a rock in a sea of chaos. And how could Glasdorf—their town in the North Pole—be anything but chaotic? They lived within a magical ice wall, hidden from the rest of the Sudenwelt, with hundreds of elves. His brother Oskar did his best to control the unruly bunch, but it was a daily challenge. Between unpredictable magik spells and an unlimited supply of eggnog, the elves in Glasdorf were quite a handful to manage.
All of their lives were mired in turmoil at the moment. Nicholas and Lucy had just welcomed their first baby into the family. Sven was secretly planning to open a furniture studio—and only Gregor knew the truth. Oskar and Kiana had adopted an elfin Bändiger and were building the North Pole’s first library. And his parents—Santa and Alena—had a full schedule packed with triathlons and philanthropic projects. Tonight was one such event, which his brother Wolfgang had been organizing for months. The New York Childrens Literacy gala promised to be a huge success, thanks to Gregor’s financial support and Wolf’s attention to detail.
Gregor wove through the crowds on Fifth Avenue, dodging shoppers and Salvation Army buckets. Bitter winds tugged at his coat and reddened his cheeks. He stopped and glanced at a window display. A fat Santa smiled at him and waved, its robotic arm twitching with Christmas cheer.
            Mocking him.
It stood to reason that the Klaus family had some natural holiday generosity in their DNA. His father was filled with compassion, his mother was sympathetic to children all over the world, his brothers poured their hearts and souls into the toys and sweet treats and acts of philanthropy and care-taking of the elves.
Emotional, kind, and thoughtful. Those were traits appropriate for the Klaus family. Those were traits nestled firmly in the genetic code of his parents and siblings. In some ironic twist of fate, those characteristics had skipped right over him. Nothing about Gregor Klaus was warm or cuddly.
He was the polar opposite of Santa Claus in every way.
He’d promised to meet his family at the affair. He needed this walk first, striding along the icy Manhattan sidewalks. He did this every day. The bracing wind reminded him he was still alive, not a robot but a man. He kept hoping that immersing himself in a sea of humanity would help him to find his own humanity.
            He kept hoping.
His family hadn’t noticed that anything was wrong. They were distracted by life’s adventures, and none of them knew what Gregor hid behind his impeccable clothes, well-trimmed goatee, and self-confident expression. That now, in addition to ice cold, he felt numb. He peered into the frosted holiday windows on Fifth Avenue, and felt absolutely…nothing.
            Yes, it certainly was ironic.
Santa’s son was a cold, hard bastard, with nary an ounce of Christmas cheer anywhere to be found.

 Happy November!

Oh My God, They're Back Again....

It's December! Yee haw! The countdown to Christmas has commenced, and the Klaus Brothers are here to celebrate. Penelope is hosting a Christmas party today, and will be giving away an Amazon gift certificate to one lucky commenter. For those of you not familiar with the Klaus boys, let me introduce you....

Nicholas Klaus: eldest son of Santa Claus, master pastry chef; runs Klaus Küche (bakery) in the North Pole

Sven Klaus: 2nd oldest son, Chief Toy Designer and Woodworker; hippy, environmentalist

Wolfgang Klaus (aka Wolfie): middle son, Director of Charitable Donations, general do-gooder; travels around the world helping needy children

Gregor Klaus: financial guru for Klaus Enterprises; likes designer duds and gourmet coffee

Oskar Klaus: youngest son, punk snowboarder and Director of Elfin Resources; likes tats, parties and snow bunnies (not necessarily in that order)

You can read all about Nicholas and his unexpected soul mate in Sweet Inspiration (The Klaus Brothers Series #1). Oskar's story will be available next Christmas...it's called Sweet Magik (The Klaus Brothers Series #2). And as a freebie for this Christmas, I posted a teaser for Sweet Adventure (The Klaus Brothers Series #3) on my website.

TO ENTER THE CONTEST....
Please stop by my website and check out my free "quickie"...the teaser for Sweet Adventure. It's available as a pdf download. Give it a quick read, then leave a comment here on this post-- any time until Dec. 8, letting me (and the Klaus Brothers) know what you thought. That's it! You'll be entered in the giveaway drawing.

Without further ado, here are the Klaus Boys....

(MUSIC PLAYING IN BACKGROUND..... "Oh my God, we're back again...." by the Backstreet Boys.....)

Oskar: Holy crap, I think Penny is playing the Backstreet Boys....

Sven: (raises eyebrow) How old is she again?

Penny: Hey! No comments about my age, hippy boy!

Gregor: I'm begging you to turn off the ipod. Here's a Harry Connick, Jr. Christmas CD. Try this. Jazzy and cool.

Nicholas: Who are the Backstreet Boys?

Oskar: (cracks up) Never mind, Nick. You don't want to take up important brain cell function with the answer to that question. Believe me.

Penny: (rolls eyes) Fine. I'll just pop in the Celine Dion Holiday Collection....

All Klaus Brothers: Nooooooo!!!!!!!!

Penny: What a bunch of whiners.

Wolfie: Here, Pen. It's the classic Bing Crosby Christmas CD. I don't think this is too offensive. (winks at Penny)

Penny: (smiles at Wolfie) You are looking fine today, Wolf Man. Been working out? (squeezes his massive biceps and blushes)

Sven: Jay-sus. Penny is back to her old tricks. By the way, just what is up with that Teaser you wrote? Please tell me that irritating freelance writer is not going to be my....my...you know....

Nicholas: Soul mate?

Wolfie: Heart's desire?

Gregor: Life partner?

Oskar: Diva-licious bombshell of love?

Penny: (smirks) Well, Sven, I guess you'll just have to wait and see. I'm busy writing Sweet Adventure right now. And Gregor....

Gregor: Hmm...yes?

Penny: You're in it, too.

Gregor: (blanches) What? What exactly is that supposed to mean?

Penny: (wags eyebrows) That irritating freelance writer, Andi De Luca...Well, she has a sister. A really hot sister. Just sayin'....

Gregor: (rubs goatee thoughtfully) How hot is she?

Oskar: You're kidding right? You know Penny likes to torture us in her books. I can only imagine the hell I'm going to suffer in Sweet Magik.

Wolfie: How bad could it be?

Sven: (snickers) Maybe Penny will stick him with a nerdy librarian or something...

Nicholas: That's a diabolical thought. One with thick glasses and a bun in her hair...

Penny: (remains suspiciously quiet)

Oskar: Whaaaaa???? Why is Penny not saying anything? (shakes his head) I'm sure my lady love is a snow bunny. Or maybe that girl I met in Vegas....

Penny: You'll be surprised, that's for sure. But in a good way.

Wolfie: (laughing) You should see the look on your face, O. (fist bumps his brothers)

Oskar: Freakin' hilarious, bro.

Penny: All right. Let's encourage our guests to check out the teaser for Sweet Adventure. Here's the description....

Laid back hippy Sven Klaus has finally met his match. Andi "The Pit Bull" De Luca is a reporter determined to uncover the secrets behind Klaus Enterprises....

Please enjoy the teaser and leave a comment letting us know what you think. Nicholas, Sven, Wolfie, Gregor and Oskar will be here today to chat.

Thanks so much for stopping by!
