3. SWEET CINDERELLA (Klaus Brothers #4) is coming soon...here's an excerpt!

THE KLAUS BROTHERS boxed set: at Amazon (books 1-3)

EXCERPT (unedited):

--> -->
Ice. Cold.
Gregor Alric Klaus, fourth son of Nicholas and Alena Klaus, Director of Finance for Klaus Enterprises, knew what his colleagues whispered behind his back.
            Cold, calculating, ruthless.
Unemotional, detached, relentless.
There was a reason he was a formidable opponent in the boardroom, and it wasn’t because he was a nice guy.
Gregor Klaus never lost the game. He played to win, every time.
Because of his financial expertise, Klaus Enterprises had established itself as a powerhouse in the industry. The company that produced hand-crafted toys was unparalleled in quality and distribution. The company that brought so many children happiness owed its success to the most cold-hearted brother in the Klaus family.
Even as a child, Gregor displayed an uncanny talent with numbers. While his brothers baked gingerbread and carved toys, he poured over the books with their elfin accountant. Assessing each season, calculating ways to cut overhead, predicting trends. His father didn’t know quite what to do with him, so he set him up as Director of Finance and moved him to New York.
            It was a perfect fit.
Gregor thrived in the urban environment. He loved the architecture, the cutting edge technology, the competition within the industry. He lived in a sparse apartment, adorned with a minimalist décor. He dressed in the height of fashion and enjoyed his gadgets. Even his dates—when he found time to squeeze in a social life—were elegant, tasteful. Cold. His brothers enjoyed an old-fashioned lifestyle in the North Pole, but Gregor had assimilated into the affluent world of Manhattan, a world away from Pfeffernusse cookies and elfin magik.
He lived for two things…his job and his family. Family loyalty was everything. He knew how much his parents and brothers depended on him. He was a rock in a sea of chaos. And how could Glasdorf—their town in the North Pole—be anything but chaotic? They lived within a magical ice wall, hidden from the rest of the Sudenwelt, with hundreds of elves. His brother Oskar did his best to control the unruly bunch, but it was a daily challenge. Between unpredictable magik spells and an unlimited supply of eggnog, the elves in Glasdorf were quite a handful to manage.
All of their lives were mired in turmoil at the moment. Nicholas and Lucy had just welcomed their first baby into the family. Sven was secretly planning to open a furniture studio—and only Gregor knew the truth. Oskar and Kiana had adopted an elfin Bändiger and were building the North Pole’s first library. And his parents—Santa and Alena—had a full schedule packed with triathlons and philanthropic projects. Tonight was one such event, which his brother Wolfgang had been organizing for months. The New York Childrens Literacy gala promised to be a huge success, thanks to Gregor’s financial support and Wolf’s attention to detail.
Gregor wove through the crowds on Fifth Avenue, dodging shoppers and Salvation Army buckets. Bitter winds tugged at his coat and reddened his cheeks. He stopped and glanced at a window display. A fat Santa smiled at him and waved, its robotic arm twitching with Christmas cheer.
            Mocking him.
It stood to reason that the Klaus family had some natural holiday generosity in their DNA. His father was filled with compassion, his mother was sympathetic to children all over the world, his brothers poured their hearts and souls into the toys and sweet treats and acts of philanthropy and care-taking of the elves.
Emotional, kind, and thoughtful. Those were traits appropriate for the Klaus family. Those were traits nestled firmly in the genetic code of his parents and siblings. In some ironic twist of fate, those characteristics had skipped right over him. Nothing about Gregor Klaus was warm or cuddly.
He was the polar opposite of Santa Claus in every way.
He’d promised to meet his family at the affair. He needed this walk first, striding along the icy Manhattan sidewalks. He did this every day. The bracing wind reminded him he was still alive, not a robot but a man. He kept hoping that immersing himself in a sea of humanity would help him to find his own humanity.
            He kept hoping.
His family hadn’t noticed that anything was wrong. They were distracted by life’s adventures, and none of them knew what Gregor hid behind his impeccable clothes, well-trimmed goatee, and self-confident expression. That now, in addition to ice cold, he felt numb. He peered into the frosted holiday windows on Fifth Avenue, and felt absolutely…nothing.
            Yes, it certainly was ironic.
Santa’s son was a cold, hard bastard, with nary an ounce of Christmas cheer anywhere to be found.

                                                                               ❊

 Happy November!

Release Day Giveaway for SOLVING FOR NIC: Kindle Paperwhite and More!

I am super excited for the release of SOLVING FOR NIC by Lexxi Callahan! Lexxi writes steamy southern-style romance. This new release--book #2 in the Southern Style Series--has an adorable smarty-pants heroine and a swoon-worthy hero who is a master of seduction. SMOKY HOT, BABY!

To celebrate the release of her new book, Lexxi is offering an amazing giveaway. One lucky winner at my blog will get a $15 gift card, and also have a chance to win the grand prize of a Kindle Paperwhite!

Here are the book blurb and purchase links for SOLVING FOR NIC...

SOLVING FOR NIC

Now that Lizzie Sellers is twenty-one, Nic Maretti can't think of a single reason why he has to stay away from her any longer. When he sees her again at Stefan and Jen's wedding, he decides he wants her. And what Nic wants, Nic gets.

He just gets a whole lot more than he bargained for with Lizzie.

Lizzie Sellers has had a crush on Nic since she was seventeen. Now that she's started a doctoral program in theoretical math, she decides it's time to put away childish things so she can focus on millennium prizes and solving one of the world's unsolvable problems. So when she sees Nic at Jen and Stefan's wedding she decides it's the perfect opportunity to get him out of her system. There is no way the real Nic Maretti could ever live up to the fantasy she's created over the years.

Except Lizzie finds out quickly that solving her Nic problem may be even more impossible than solving the Riemann Hypothesis. And sometimes reality is way better than fantasy.

What happens when two people who have already made up their minds about their future discover an even better solution that is at once terrifying and irresistible?

“An adorably steamy hot and humorous romance featuring a young brilliant math geek and a 'worldy' slightly jaded playboy who discover that love has no defining boundaries or rules. Review to come.” Tori – Smexybooks

SOLVING FOR NIC by Lexxi Callahan is a wonderful second installment of the Southern Style Series. Once again, Callahan has created a sexy, tender, and troubled couple searching for their happy ending in the southern sunshine. I love this series! – PENNY WATSON, Bestselling Author of APPLES SHOULD BE RED

Penelope's Fun, Different, Quirky, Not the Same Old-Same Old Summer Reading Recommendations

After reading my 3rd "summer reading recommendation" list and falling asleep, I decided it was time to offer something a bit different, instead of the same old-same old authors/books.

Here are some of my favorite recent reads, in a variety of genres, that would all make fabulous "beach" reads this summer. They run the gamut from sultry, sexy, romantic to scary-as-crap, hilarious, bittersweet, charming, fascinating, and finally...hipster.

I like my summer reading to be light, quick, and fun for the most part. Most of these fit the bill.

Work on your tan, and fall in love with these delightful books!

HAPPY SUMMER READING!

1. HORROR/DARK FANTASY: Waking The Merrow by Heather Rigney

If you're looking for something unexpectedly funny, scary as hell, incredibly well-written, and chock full of history and suspense, I highly recommend this debut novel.

READ IT IF YOU DARE! Here is my review.

2. COMEDY: The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion

This is such a cute, quirky, adorable, fun, and romantic story. It's one of my favorites this year. I can see you reading this on the beach, while sipping a frozen mango margarita, and laughing out loud.

TRY IT!

3. HISTORICAL ROMANCE: The Pirate's Secret Baby by Darlene Marshall

Ms. Marshall is just a fabulous historical romance writer. She has the perfect combination of excellent writing, romance, and storytelling. She also has a real knack for fun banter and larger-than-life characters. A lovely, lusty book, perfect for a summer read.

4. HARLEQUIN SILHOUETTE DESIRE ROMANCE: Single Dad by Jennifer Greene

This "vintage" Harly (1995) was so sweet and adorable. I think it was recommended on the Amazon message boards, and I took a chance on it. I was so happy I did! It has a super sexy hero and a very romantic storyline. I have been heartily enjoying Harlies recently, and this one is a fav.

5. QUIRKY HIPSTER ROMANCE: Geek With The Cat Tattoo by Theresa Weir

This book is a little gem of a story. Beautifully written and balanced and fun (cat's POV included!) and filled with old-fashioned romantic moments. I also highly recommend the first book in the series, Girl with the Cat Tattoo. Here is my review. Theresa Weir is a supremely under-appreciated author. Her work is flawless and wonderful.

6. MYSTERY: The Gamache Series by Louise Penny

Best. Journey. Of. Your. Life.
You. Must. Read. These. Books.
On a beach. On a plane. On your porch.
Anywhere.

I LOVE YOU, GAMACHE!

7. HARLEQUIN PRESENTS: Marchese's Forgotten Bride by Michelle Reid

Thanks to Lexxi Callahan, I am now hopelessly addicted to Harlequin Presents! It's such a fun addiction. I have read about 100 of these books in the last month. It was difficult choosing just one HP for this list, but I think Marchese's Forgotten Bride is a good one. It includes amnesia, betrayal, and secret babies for the win! Warning: HPs include overbearing heroes, wispy heroines, lots of bad behavior, and extreme groveling. It's all about the grovel!

Here is my review.

8. CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE: Sweetened with a Kiss by Lexxi Callahan

Speaking of Lexxi, here's another perfect summer read. This book made my list last year, and it's up here again. For a good reason. It's sexy, sultry, steamy, set in New Orleans, with amazing chemistry between the hero and heroine. Sex-ay, baby!

9. LITERARY FICTION SHORT STORY COLLECTION: River Talk by CB Anderson

I read this collection of short stories on the beach in Florida and I loved them. Each one is beautifully crafted and written, thoughtful, bittersweet. They are snippets of life, set in Maine, and Anderson's writing is truly inspiring and lovely. Highly recommend this collection.

10. CULINARY ROMANCE: The Chocolate Rose by Laura Florand

This new-to-me author has a gift for blending the deliciousness of Paris, gourmet chocolate, and romance. It's a heady treat. The hero in this story is such a wonderful mix of vulnerability and cocky-alpha male French chef, I couldn't get enough. And he ROARS when he gets angry. SO AWESOME! Like an angry French lion. LOVE IT! This book is currently free...guaranteed, it's the best freebie you'll download this summer. HURRY!

EXTRA CREDIT SUMMER READING:

JAWS by Peter Benchley

Yes, the film is extraordinary. But this novel is fun, too, and quite different from the movie. It could be the perfect beach read. Unless you want to go swimming.

So, there you go. A nice mix of romance, mystery, horror, lit fiction, and comedy. Try one of these books and spice up your summer reading.

Happy Reading!
Penny
